How to make 2024 a greener year

A New Year brings a whole host of lifestyle opportunities

The New Year gives us all time to reflect on our lifestyles and consider how we can make positive changes for the planet. Green New Year's resolutions not only benefit the environment, but can also lead to a healthier, more sustainable way of life. In this Blog, we'll explore a variety of creative and impactful resolutions for 2024.

These are my New Year Resolutions for 2024:

1 – I would like to re-do my Carbon Footprint using the WWF Carbon Footprint Calculator (https://footprint.wwf.org.uk) – and review my Net Zero Carbon Journey (I would need to be on the way to hitting the 2027 target).

2 – I would like to recommit to sustainable travel – I have made huge leaps with this so far.

3 – The plan is to finish building my Net Zero Carbon house using low-embodied carbon ideas and hyper-local tradespeople.

4 – I will try not to do any unnecessary shopping and will keep using the Circular Economy for clothes, tools and equipment.

5 – I will make the time to enjoy Nature, smell the flowers and be an advocate for biodiversity.

What are your Resolutions?

If you have not had time to make any, we have put together some great ideas for you.

Embrace Plant-Based Eating: transitioning to a plant-based diet is a powerful resolution for both personal health and the environment. Aim to incorporate more plant-based meals into your routine and explore delicious alternatives to animal products. This not only reduces your carbon footprint but also promotes a more sustainable and compassionate food system.

Reduce Single-Use Plastics: make a commitment to significantly cut down on single-use plastics in your daily life. Invest in reusable bags, bottles, and containers. Choose products with minimal packaging, and say no to single-use items like straws and disposable cutlery. This resolution contributes to reducing plastic pollution in oceans and landfills.

Grow Your Own: consider starting a small vegetable or herb garden. Growing your own food not only connects you with nature but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting produce. If outdoor space is limited, try growing herbs on a windowsill or balcony.

Choose Sustainable Fashion: explore sustainable and ethical fashion options. Support brands that prioritise eco-friendly materials, fair labour practices, and transparent supply chains. Consider 'thrift' shopping or clothing swaps to give pre-loved garments a second life.

Conserve Energy at Home: pledge to reduce your energy consumption at home. Invest in energy-efficient appliances, switch to LED bulbs, and be mindful of turning off lights and electronics when not in use. Consider installing a smart thermostat to optimise heating and cooling.

Eco-Friendly Commuting: re-evaluate your commuting habits. If possible, choose public transportation, carpooling, cycling, or walking instead of driving alone. These choices reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, while promoting a healthier lifestyle.

Support Local Businesses: make a conscious effort to support local businesses and farmers. By choosing local products, you reduce the environmental impact associated with long-distance transportation and support the vitality of your community.

Minimise Food Waste: develop strategies to minimise food waste. Plan meals, store food properly, and get creative with leftovers. Composting kitchen scraps is another excellent way to reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfills.

Volunteer for Environmental Causes: dedicate some of your time to volunteering for local environmental initiatives. This could involve participating in community clean-ups, tree planting events, or conservation projects. Your direct involvement can make a tangible impact.

Educate Yourself and Others: make a commitment to continually educate yourself about environmental issues and sustainable living practices. Share your knowledge with friends and family, fostering a community of informed and eco-conscious individuals.

Reduce Water Usage: be mindful of your water consumption at home. Fix leaks promptly, install water-efficient appliances, and consider collecting rainwater for watering plants. Small changes in water usage can contribute to significant water conservation.

These Green New Year's resolutions are not just about making temporary changes; they're about adopting a sustainable mindset that can shape a brighter and greener future. Each small action contributes to a collective effort to preserve the beauty of our planet for generations to come.

Cheer's to a sustainable and fulfilling New Year, from all of us at PRL!

Property Revolutions Limited is the distillation of over 35 years of design, innovation and construction - combined with the determination to create sustainable projects in the built environment. PRL is designed from the ground up to be fundamentally green; we exclusively focus on green and sustainable concepts, techniques and materials. Being a green company means that all of our projects have low carbon ambitions. No project is too small or too large for us. It could be a small eco retrofit project (© Maltings Barn - SJD), a large renovation and deep retrofit (© Heath Lodge) - or even a multiple development site which aspires to be net zero carbon from the get-go (© Dereham Apartments). We not only endeavour to inspire people, but we make absolutely sure that our processes are reliable, value for money, robust and trusted.”
